About St. Hilda's Diocesan High School & its Sixth Form Association
How Our Story Began

St. Hilda's Diocesan High School for girls, nestled on a hill overlooking Brown's Town in St. Ann has had a colourful history of excellence in devotion, achievement, and services. For over 100 years, St. Hilda's has stood tall in Jamaica's educational history. It has maintained its religious connection with the Anglican Diocese in Jamaica and presently under the Board Chairmanship of Bishop Leon Golding, the school is forging ahead.
St. Hilda's has its part to play in the 21st century, and so the successes of the past and the futuristic goals of the present administration must make the school continue to evolve and take its rightful place in the development of our nation.
EARLY BEGINNINGS
St. Hilda's was established in 1906 as deaconess Home High School, by Canon James Philip Hall, who was then Rector of St, Mark's Anglican Church in Brown's Town.
Canon Hall, after whom one of the houses is named, was a well-rounded man. he was a keen businessman, architect, and builder,
It was his genius which was responsible for the fine set of cut-stone buildings Elizabethan style, built in 1922. The buildings presently house the administrative and boarding area.
Deaconess Home High School was a temporary name for the newly founded girl's school and so in 1917, Bishop Nuttal, Archbishop
of the West Indies and ahead of the Diocese Council renamed it Diocesan High School. Miss March was the first Headmistress. Another name change came about during the tenure of the third headmistress, Miss Turner.
The school was now named after the devout Hilda, Abbess of Whitby. Hilda was a devout Christian woman and her insistence on the study of the Holy scripture and on proper preparation for Christian leadership was exemplary. Hilda's influence and her example of peace and charity continue to be an integral part of the life of St. Hilda's Diocesan High.
A BOARDING SCHOOL
Miss Una Jeffery-Smith, the second Headmistress, founded the first boarding house in 1907, at Bellevue on Top Road, few blocks from the present site.
St. Hilda's Is presently one of the few boarding institutions left in the island, Boarding continues to be an integral part of the school's programmes and caters to the overall development of each girl.

Board Chairman's Message
I am pleased that we at the St. Hilda's High School have been able to fulfil a vision of re-introducing the sixth form as part of our offerings, we are always looking at ways to improve our offerings and better equip our girls for the future. this will be for those who are able to take advantage of the programme better equip them for the wide world Mor importantly, it will help them make that transition to the tertiary level.
We welcome this batch of students into the sixth form. The hope is that they will continue to keep the flag of St. Hilda's Diocesan High School high with pride. Over the years the school has prided itself in producing well-rounded ladies of high academic achievement. I know that this group of sixth formers will make us no less proud.
Advice as you go forward. There is the tendency for students who have been successful in their CXC exams to relax believing that they have made it. You have achieved but there is still more to realize towards the goal of excellence. At St. Hilda's we strive for excellence You have been selected to continue your studies at St. Hilda's for another two years, because we believe you can achieve your goal and with excellence
We ask the parents to continue to give their support their children and the school.
Welcome and congrats. Have a great year.
The Rt. Rev. Leon Golding
Chairman of the Board of Governors and
Suffragan Bishop of Montego Bay
